Servers & Storage

Servers sound scary, and a lot of businesses we deal with still have the impression it will be a massive, wall hugging machine with whirring tapes on it but that isn’t the case!

Standard servers may be only slightly larger than a regular PC, but they’re packed with a whole different level of tech designed for redundancy, reliability, and scalability. This ensures that once your server becomes the backbone of your business—handling everything from data storage, emails to security —it’ll keep running smoothly day in and day out.

Servers can be looked at in two ways: hardware and software. Getting the hardware right from the start is crucial, and we’ll dive into that below. The software, on the other hand, powers the essential features your business relies on, like central data storage, Sage/Accounts, centralised security, centralised user management and more.

We support all Microsoft Windows server products and were one of the first to earn the title of Microsoft Small Business Specialists in the UK.

When it comes to your server, always plan ahead. While servers typically have little financial value after 5 years, a solid one can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years—or even longer in some cases, as many of our clients have experienced.

We offer a wide range of servers, tailored to your specific needs, and we have a particular preference for Lenovo servers. We find they’re faster, more cost-effective, and generally more reliable than other brands.

If you already have a server, no worries—we can support it, regardless of the brand or software it’s running.

Servers can be complex, but we’re here to guide you through the selection process and help you avoid any potential issues down the line.

Servers & Storage

Servers have a wealth of physical features that can help your business and are worth investing in and generally cannot be added afterwards

Redundant PSU (Power Supply Unit)

These are systems that run 2 power supplies, so if one fails, the business keeps running. These can also be replaced without turning the server off!

RAID (Stripe / Mirrored Drives)

This is a clever system where your information and the server operating system is stored on more than 1 hard drive, meaning if there is a failure of a hard drive, your data and windows is kept safe. We always recommend a BBU (Battery Backup Unit), these provide additional power backup to the card that controls the RAID system.

SAS Hard Drives

No, these aren’t special forces! SAS is a technology that allows very fast, reliable data transfer. SAS Disks are rated to run 24/7 (Normal computer disks are on rated for 8 hours a day!) and they can be swapped with the system still on (Hot Swap) – don’t skimp on the disks, these are what hold all your data! We also recommend a minimum of 2 disks, ideally 4 or more depending on your business storage requirements.

SSD Storage

SSD (Solid State Drive) are storage drives that have no moving parts, they work in the same way as memory sticks do and are an excellent way of improving reliability and speed on a server. Server SSDs are rated to run 24/7 and increase the speed of server based applications, and storage speed for the organisation. These are generally slightly more expensive then your SAS Drives but are a good way to increase productivity and application load times.
