Why SCADA Reliability Is the Backbone of Every Windfarm and Solar Site

Jul 6, 2026

Renewable energy sites do not run themselves, however unmanned they may look from the road. Behind every turbine and every solar array sits a web of sensors, controllers and communication links that report back to a control room, often hundreds of miles away. That web is SCADA, and when it goes down, so does your visibility into the site.

What SCADA actually does for a renewable site

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems monitor, control and analyse the equipment on a windfarm or solar farm in real time. They pull data from turbines, inverters, substations and weather stations, then present it in a form your operations team can act on. Get an early warning of a fault, adjust output remotely, or simply confirm that a remote substation is behaving itself: all of it depends on SCADA working, and working continuously.

The trouble is that renewable sites are, by definition, often in remote or exposed locations. That is where the wind and sun are best, but it is also where connectivity is hardest to guarantee and where a fault can go unnoticed the longest if the systems reporting it are not reliable themselves.

Where reliability tends to break down

Shared or consumer-grade connections that slow down or drop out during peak demand, right when responsive data matters most

Communication links with no redundancy, so a single fault takes the whole site offline from a monitoring standpoint

Ageing or mismatched hardware layered onto a site over several years without a coherent maintenance plan

Security gaps in remote or unmanned locations, where physical access controls and network security are easy to overlook

Building a SCADA setup that holds up

A dependable SCADA environment starts with the connection. Leased line solutions give a windfarm or solar site a dedicated, private link rather than a shared connection, which means consistent speeds, lower latency and a smaller attack surface for anyone looking to intercept operational data. For sites where uptime is critical, that dedicated connection is often the difference between catching a fault in minutes and finding out about it days later.

On top of connectivity, the software layer matters just as much. Working with established SCADA platforms, and integrating them properly with turbine or inverter manufacturers’ own systems, keeps data flowing cleanly instead of getting stuck in translation between mismatched systems. Add turbine-mounted cameras and IP surveillance, and your operations team gets not just the numbers but a visual check on rotor blades, nacelles and site security too, all without a site visit.

None of this is a one-off install and walk away job. Renewable assets run for decades, and the systems watching over them need ongoing maintenance, monitoring and troubleshooting to keep pace with new equipment, firmware updates and changing site conditions.

Why this is worth getting right

Downtime on a renewable site is not just a technical inconvenience. Every hour a turbine sits offline, or a fault goes undetected because a data link failed, is lost generation and lost revenue. Reliable SCADA and communications infrastructure is what turns a site from something you hope is working into something you know is working.

Where E2TS fits in

E2 Technology Solutions has spent over 15 years supporting remote windfarm and solar sites across the UK, working alongside SCADA providers such as Siemens Gamesa and RePlant. From leased line connectivity and SCADA integration to turbine cameras, site security and ongoing maintenance contracts, the aim is the same throughout: keep your site visible, your data reliable, and your operations team able to act before a small issue becomes a costly one.

If your renewable site’s monitoring and communications setup has grown piecemeal over the years, or you are planning a new project and want it built on solid foundations from day one, get in touch with the E2TS team to talk through what a properly integrated SCADA and connectivity solution could look like for your site.
